The iPhone 18 Pro is here, and the first thing to know is that it does not look dramatically different from the iPhone 17 Pro. Same broad shape, same camera plateau, the same two sizes at 6.3 and 6.9 inches. The interesting changes sit under the glass, and a few are the kind you only appreciate after a few weeks of use. Here is what actually changed, grouped by what affects the phone in your hand.

When is the iPhone 18 Pro coming out?

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on 9 September 2026, with pre-orders on 12 September and general sale on 18 September. The same event brought Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, while the standard iPhone 18, a cheaper 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air are held back to spring 2027. Design and display: familiar, with a few tweaks

The front and back are recognisably iPhone 17 Pro, but there are four changes worth knowing.

A smaller Dynamic Island. The rumour doing the rounds since January is that Face ID's flood illuminator moves under the display, which frees Apple to shrink the Dynamic Island cutout. If it holds, it is the most visible change on the front of the phone.
LTPO+ screens. The displays are expected to keep the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes but move to a newer LTPO+ panel. That should help battery life more than it changes anything you can actually see.
A cleaner back. The Ceramic Shield section around the MagSafe area is rumoured to drop the current two-tone look for a more frosted, seamless finish.
A longer-lasting Pro Max. The Pro Max carries the bigger battery, as usual - Apple rates it for up to 45 hours of video playback against 36 hours on the smaller 18 Pro, the widest gap between the two sizes in a while.

Cameras: one genuinely useful upgrade, and a fix

This is where I would focus if photography is your reason to buy.

Variable aperture on the main camera. The 48-megapixel main camera gained a variable aperture that adjusts from f/1.48 to f/4.0, so you physically control how much light reaches the sensor and get real command of depth of field rather than a software approximation. Phone sensors are still small, but for anyone who shoots stills seriously this is the standout upgrade. A simpler Camera Control button. Apple is expected to strip the Camera Control button back to pressure sensitivity only, dropping the touch-swipe and haptic layers that plenty of people found fiddly. Fewer accidental inputs is a fair trade for fewer party tricks.

Silicon and connectivity: where most of the work went

If the outside is iterative, the inside is where this generation earns its keep.

The A20 Pro chip on a 2nm process. The headline internal change is the A20 Pro, the first phone chip on a 2-nanometer process, up from the A19 Pro's 3nm, with a new packaging design. A third-generation C2 modem. Apple's own modem story continues with the C2, following the C1 in the 16e and the faster C1X in the iPhone Air. Each generation has pushed speed and efficiency, and the C2 is the piece that unlocks the next point.
5G via satellite. With the C2 on board, the 18 Pro supports 5G over satellite, meaning basic web access when you are off both Wi-Fi and cellular. For anyone who spends time out of coverage, that matters more than it sounds.
The N1 wireless chip. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps Apple's N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth and Thread rather than moving to a new one this year.

Colours: a new burgundy joins the line

The new finish this year is burgundy, joining black, silver and glacier. Colour is the most personal part of any iPhone decision, and burgundy is the one that stands apart from the outgoing line-up.

What about the price?

My take

Coming from an iPhone 15 Pro or older, though, the combination of a 2nm chip, a variable-aperture camera and satellite 5G makes this a strong year to jump.
