Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro on 9 September 2026, and the most consequential change is not the new burgundy finish - it is the chip. The A20 Pro is Apple's first phone processor built on a 2-nanometer process, and it sets the direction for everything Apple silicon does next.
A19 Pro or A20 Pro? Clearing up the confusion
A surprising number of people are still searching for an "A19 Pro release date", so a quick reset: the A19 Pro already exists. It shipped in the iPhone 17 Pro line in September 2025, and it's the same family of silicon that makes the MacBook Neo so interesting at £599. Its successor, the A20 Pro, arrived in the iPhone 18 Pro in September 2026.
What 2nm actually means
Chip processes are named for generations, not literal measurements, but the practical point is simple: a 2nm process packs more transistors into the same space than the 3nm process used for the A19 Pro. More transistors in the same area means more performance for the same power, or the same performance for less power - which is where battery life gains come from.
"Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip is expected to use TSMC's first-generation 2nm process, whereas the A19 Pro chip is 3nm. With a 2nm architecture and a new packaging design, the A20 Pro chip should deliver solid year-over-year performance and power efficiency gains."

Temper expectations on raw speed, though. First-generation nodes tend to prioritise efficiency over headline performance, and that suited Apple here: the iPhone 18 Pro's display is also tuned for battery. In the event Apple led on battery life rather than benchmark scores - the Pro Max is rated for up to 45 hours of video playback.
The rest of the silicon story
The A20 Pro is one of three Apple-designed chips in the iPhone 18 Pro. There is also the C2 cellular modem and the N1 wireless chip that handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth and Thread. Apple's own modem is where the interesting change sits:
"With the C2 modem, the iPhone 18 Pro models will reportedly support 5G via satellite for web browsing without Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity."
Add it up and the iPhone 18 Pro is the closest Apple has come to an all-Apple phone: its own CPU and GPU, its own modem, its own wireless chip. That vertical integration - not any single spec - is the real story of this chip generation.
When the A20 Pro arrived
Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026, with pre-orders on 12 September and general sale on 18 September. The foldable - officially the iPhone Duo, not the rumoured "iPhone Ultra" - was shown at the same event and goes on sale on 23 October.

Is the A20 Pro worth upgrading for?
If you are on an iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro, this is the year to jump: a new 2nm process, a new modem and a battery-focused display all landed at once. If you bought a 17 Pro, relax - year-over-year chip gains are rarely worth the upgrade on their own, and the A20 Pro will still be here next autumn.
