Apple unveils the iPhone 18 Pro in roughly eight weeks, and the most consequential change isn't the Dark Cherry colour or the smaller Dynamic Island - it's the chip. The A20 Pro is expected to be Apple's first processor built on TSMC's 2nm process, and it sets the direction for everything Apple silicon does next.
A19 Pro or A20 Pro? Clearing up the confusion
A surprising number of people are still searching for an "A19 Pro release date", so a quick reset: the A19 Pro already exists. It shipped in the iPhone 17 Pro line in September 2025, and it's the same family of silicon that makes the MacBook Neo so interesting at £599. The chip arriving this September is its successor, the A20 Pro.
What 2nm actually means
Chip processes are named for generations, not literal measurements, but the practical point is simple: a 2nm process packs more transistors into the same space than the 3nm process used for the A19 Pro. More transistors in the same area means more performance for the same power, or the same performance for less power - which is where battery life gains come from.

Temper expectations on raw speed, though. First-generation nodes tend to prioritise efficiency over headline performance, and that suits Apple: the iPhone 18 Pro's rumoured LTPO+ display is also about battery. Expect the September keynote slide to lead with battery life, not benchmark scores.
The rest of the silicon story
The A20 Pro is one of three Apple-designed chips expected in the iPhone 18 Pro. There's also the C2, Apple's third-generation cellular modem, and the N2, the successor to the N1 wireless chip that handles Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth and Thread. The modem upgrade carries the most interesting rumour of the lot:
"With the C2 modem, the iPhone 18 Pro models will reportedly support 5G via satellite for web browsing without Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity."
Add it up and the iPhone 18 Pro is the closest Apple has come to an all-Apple phone: its own CPU and GPU, its own modem, its own wireless chip. That vertical integration - not any single spec - is the real story of this chip generation.
When the A20 Pro arrives
"Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable 'iPhone Ultra' in the first half of September, and the devices should be released in the second half of the month."

Should you wait for the A20 Pro?
If you're on an iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro, September looks like the year to jump: a new process node, a new modem and a battery-focused display all land at once. If you bought a 17 Pro, relax - year-over-year chip gains are never worth the upgrade on their own, and 2nm will still be there next autumn.
