Apple is about to make buying a MacBook Pro genuinely confusing. The M6 MacBook Pro arrives this autumn, a redesigned MacBook Ultra lands beside it running last year's M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and the M7 turns up roughly six months after that. Three machines, three chip generations, none of them in the order you would expect.
If you are trying to work out which one to buy, the chip numbers are actively misleading this year. Here is what is actually happening, and which of the three I would put money on.
What the M6 MacBook Pro actually is
The M6 MacBook Pro is the entry-level 14-inch model. Same chassis you can buy today, same port selection, same battery, new chip. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has it arriving in late October, and it carries the first Mac chip built on TSMC's 2nm process.
That is the whole update. No OLED panel, no touchscreen, no redesign. If you like the current MacBook Pro and simply want the newest silicon inside it, this is the machine for you.
The M6 Pro and M6 Max are not coming at all
This is the part that breaks the pattern. Apple is skipping the M6 Pro, the M6 Max and the M6 Ultra entirely. Only the base M6 ships from that family, and then the line jumps straight to M7.
That has not happened before. Every M-series generation since the M1 has had Pro and Max variants, usually within a few months of the base chip. Skipping all three at once is a deliberate reset rather than a slipped schedule.
It also means anyone waiting for an M6 Max to replace an M1 Max or M2 Max is waiting for a product that does not exist. That wait now runs to 2027.
MacBook Pro M6 release date and what lands beside it
The reporting points to late October 2026 for the M6 MacBook Pro, alongside a wider Mac refresh. It will not be the headline machine at that event.
The MacBook Ultra runs M5 Pro and M5 Max
The redesigned laptop, currently being referred to as the MacBook Ultra, is the one with the thinner body, the OLED display, a touchscreen, a Dynamic Island and possibly cellular. It arrives at the same time. It runs M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
Read that again, because it is the strangest thing about Apple's autumn. The cheapest new MacBook Pro will have a newer chip generation than the most expensive one on the shelf next to it.
That is not carelessness. Those M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are already in production and already quick, and the engineering effort this cycle went into the display and the chassis. But it does mean "which chip generation" and "which machine is better" have become two separate questions for the first time.
Why Apple pulled the M7 forward
Gurman's explanation is short and blunt: "The reason for this break with tradition: AI."
The M7 family is reportedly where the significant neural engine work landed, and Apple decided those gains justified writing off an entire M6 Pro and Max cycle to get there sooner. The M7 Ultra is said to approach dedicated AI accelerators such as Nvidia's Blackwell on some workloads, and to support up to 1.5TB of memory.
That memory figure is worth flagging as a leak rather than a spec. If it holds, it would match the ceiling of the 2019 Intel Mac Pro, which is a strange circle for Apple silicon to close. Nobody outside Apple has run these chips, so treat the Blackwell comparison as a claim, not a benchmark.
On timing, the M7 is expected in spring 2027 rather than the usual autumn slot. A base 14-inch MacBook Pro with M7 comes first, with M7 Pro and Max updates to the 14-inch and 16-inch models later in 2027.
What the 2nm chip actually buys you
2nm is a real step down from the 3nm process the M4 and M5 generations used. A full node shrink usually gives you either meaningfully more performance at the same power draw, or the same performance at noticeably less. Apple normally takes some of each.
For a laptop, that mostly shows up as battery life and sustained performance under load rather than headline peak numbers. If you render, compile or export for hours at a stretch, that matters far more than a single-core score you will never see again.
What 2nm does not do is make a base M6 faster than an M5 Max. A base chip on a better process is still a base chip. I made a similar point about the MacBook Neo 2, where the memory jump mattered more than the chip name.
Which MacBook Pro should you actually buy?
Buy the M6 MacBook Pro if you want ports and battery
The current MacBook Pro chassis is the best laptop Apple has made in a decade, and the M6 version keeps all of it. HDMI, SD card, MagSafe, three Thunderbolt ports, and a battery that genuinely lasts a working day. If your objection to the redesign is that it sounds thinner and more fragile, this is your answer.
It is also going to be the cheapest new MacBook Pro on sale, which matters more than usual after Apple's June price rise across Macs and iPads.
Buy the MacBook Ultra if the screen is the point
OLED on a laptop is a genuine change, not a spec bump. Black is actually black, HDR content has real range, and if you grade video or edit photos the difference is visible from across a room.
The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips inside it are not a compromise for most people. They are last year's high-end silicon, and last year's high-end Apple silicon is still faster than almost anything else in a laptop.
Wait for the M7 if you are already on Apple silicon
If you are running an M1 Pro or newer and the machine is fine, spring 2027 is a short wait for a chip Apple has reorganised its entire roadmap around. The M6 is a one-generation step. The M7 is where the interesting work is.
This is the case where I would skip the M6 MacBook Pro without much hesitation.
Buy an M5 machine now if you need one now
If your current Mac is dying, buy today. The M5 line is mature, discounted at third-party retailers, and perfectly capable. Waiting six months to save nothing is not a strategy. The same logic applies to the desktop side, which I covered when the Mac Studio M5 was pinned down.

My take
The M6 MacBook Pro is a fine laptop that has landed in an awkward spot on the calendar. It is a base chip in an old chassis, six months ahead of the generation Apple has rearranged its whole roadmap to reach sooner.
If I were buying this autumn I would take the MacBook Ultra and stop worrying about the chip number on the box. If I were not buying this autumn, I would wait for spring and skip the M6 entirely. The one thing I would not do is buy a base M6 in October and then watch an M7 version of the same machine appear before summer.
