Apple Studio Display: The 120Hz Is on the Other One

Apple unveils new Studio Display and all-new Studio Display XDR

Search for the Apple Studio Display and Google hands you three things: Apple's own product page, a Wikipedia entry, and a tech specs sheet for a monitor Apple stopped selling in March. None of them lead with the fact that actually decides the purchase.

The 2026 Apple Studio Display, the one on sale today at £1,499, still runs at 60Hz. The 120Hz that everyone associates with this year's refresh went to the other model, the Studio Display XDR, and even on that one it needs a recent Mac to do anything.

If you are choosing a monitor this month, that split is the whole story. The pound figures sitting around it are messier than Apple's store page makes them look, so let me lay them out.

What the Apple Studio Display gives you for £1,499

Apple replaced both displays on 3 March 2026 and started shipping on the 11th. The standard model kept its shape, its size and its price, and changed underneath.

You get a 27-inch 5K Retina panel at 5120x2880, 218 pixels per inch, 600 nits of brightness, one billion colours and P3 wide colour. The camera is a 12MP Center Stage unit with Desk View. Sound comes from a six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers, and there is a three-mic array with directional beamforming.

The connections are the real upgrade. Two Thunderbolt 5 ports at up to 120Gb/s, two USB-C ports at up to 10Gb/s, and 96W of charging back down the cable to your Mac. One of the Thunderbolt 5 ports is downstream, so you can hang accessories off the back rather than off your laptop.

There is also a chip in there now. MacRumors reports an A19 in the standard display and an A19 Pro in the XDR, which is what makes Center Stage and the spatial audio processing work locally. Apple's own announcement never mentions a chip at all, which tells you how much it wanted that detail discussed.

The refresh rate did not move. Apple's tech specs page for the 2026 model lists "60Hz refresh rate" in plain text, halfway down. Four years, a new chip and a new port standard, same 60Hz.

Is 60Hz actually a problem in 2026?

For most of what a Mac does on a 27-inch screen, no. Text does not benefit from a faster refresh, and 5K at 218 ppi is still the sharpest way to read code or grade stills on a desk. That density is the reason people buy this display in the first place.

Where you notice it is cursor movement, window dragging and long scrolls through a document or a timeline. Once you have used a 120Hz iPhone or a MacBook Pro with ProMotion, going back to 60Hz on the big screen in front of you is the kind of thing you stop seeing after a week and then see immediately again when you switch back.

What makes it awkward is the price bracket. £1,499 buys a lot of 27-inch monitor elsewhere, and almost none of that money goes on refresh rate here. You are paying for pixel density, colour accuracy, the webcam, the speakers and the Thunderbolt 5 hub. If a smooth screen is what you were shopping for, this is not the product, and no amount of Apple integration changes that.

The 120Hz is on the XDR, and it wants an M4

The Studio Display XDR is the model that got the panel upgrade: a mini-LED backlight with 2,304 dimming zones, up to 1,000 nits in SDR and 2,000 nits peak in HDR, 120Hz with Adaptive Sync, plus Adobe RGB coverage and DICOM presets for medical imaging.

Apple pitches it at "pro users who need the ultimate front-of-screen performance" and names HDR video editing, 3D rendering and diagnostic radiology as the jobs it is for. That is a narrower audience than the price gap suggests people think it is.

Now the part worth reading twice before spending £2,999. Apple's compatibility note on the XDR spec sheet reads: "M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 and M3 support Studio Display XDR at up to 60Hz."

That sentence is doing a lot of work. It names M2 and M3 without their Pro and Max variants, and MacRumors reads the omission as those chips being able to hit 120Hz. Apple has not spelled it out either way and I am not going to pretend it is settled, so treat the Pro and Max question as open.

What is certain, from Apple's own page: every M1 Mac, and a plain M2 or M3, tops out at 60Hz on the XDR. If that is your machine, the £1,500 step up buys you brightness and dimming zones, not a smoother screen. Check your chip before you check out.

Both displays also require Apple silicon and macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later. An Intel Mac will not drive either one, at any refresh rate.

The options tax, in pounds

Here is every configuration Apple UK sells today, taken from the two store pages this morning.

Two things fall out of that list, and both are my own arithmetic rather than anything Apple advertises.

First, nano-texture glass costs £300 and height adjustment costs £400, on both models. Load the standard Studio Display with both and it is £2,199, which is 46.7 per cent more than the £1,499 in the headline. The glass alone is a fifth of the base price.

Second, the stands are priced backwards between the two displays. On the standard model, the VESA adapter and the tilt stand both cost £1,499, so the mount is free and height adjustment is the £400 extra. On the XDR, the height-adjustable stand is bundled into the £2,999, so choosing VESA takes £400 off. Same £400, opposite direction. If you already own a monitor arm, the XDR is the model where declining the stand actually pays you.

What the UK is really paying, worked out

Apple's UK prices include VAT and its US prices do not, so the two numbers are not comparable until you strip the 20 per cent out. This next bit is my arithmetic, and you can check it in a calculator.

Studio Display: £1,499 including VAT is £1,249.17 excluding it, against $1,599 in the States. That is an implied rate of $1.28 to the pound.

Studio Display XDR: £2,999 including VAT is £2,499.17 excluding it, against $3,299. That is $1.32 to the pound.

The cheaper display is priced on the worse rate, by about 3.1 per cent. Put the standard Studio Display on the XDR's rate and it would land near £1,454 including VAT, so there is roughly £45 of extra UK rounding sitting on the entry model that is not sitting on the expensive one.

It is not a scandal, and £45 on £1,499 is not going to change anyone's mind. It is just the opposite of what people assume, which is that the halo product carries the markup. Here the entry model does.

The four-year price freeze nobody mentions

The Studio Display cost $1,599 at launch in March 2022. It costs $1,599 today. Nano-texture was $1,899 then and it is $1,899 now.

That is genuinely unusual for Apple in 2026, and it stands out against what has happened everywhere else in the line-up. When Apple moved iPad prices in June, the cheapest iPad went up 30.4 per cent in a single step by my maths. A monitor holding a flat price for four years, through that, is a cut in real terms.

The freeze creates one trap, though. The 2022 and 2026 displays look identical and now sit at the same number on a shelf, so price tells you nothing about which one you are looking at on the clearance page or the second-hand market.

The tells are Thunderbolt 5 instead of Thunderbolt 3, a second downstream port on the back, and Desk View support on the camera. If a listing mentions none of those, assume it is the 2022 model and pay 2022 money for it.

So which one, if any

Buy the standard Studio Display if you want 5K at 218 ppi with a usable webcam and speakers built in, and you have made your peace with 60Hz. Nothing else at this resolution sits as tidily on a Mac desk, and the Thunderbolt 5 hub with 96W charging does genuinely replace a dock, which is £100 or so back in your pocket.

Buy the XDR if you grade HDR for a living and you have an M4 or newer Mac. On an M1, or a base M2 or M3, you are paying £1,500 for brightness rather than for motion, and that is a much thinner case.

Buy neither if the £1,499 is the number that stings. A 24-inch M6 iMac costs the same and has an entire computer behind the glass. And if there is an older 5K iMac in a cupboard, I have written up how I turned mine into a second monitor rather than replacing it.

Whichever way you go, the machine on the other end matters more than the panel does, and the Mac that pairs with a display like this is not always the one people assume. I went through that trade-off in detail when comparing the Mac mini and the Mac Studio.

Studio Display questions people actually ask

Is the Apple Studio Display 120Hz?

No. The standard Studio Display, including the 2026 model, is 60Hz. Apple's tech specs page lists it plainly. Only the Studio Display XDR runs at 120Hz with Adaptive Sync, and only when it is connected to a recent enough Mac.

Does the Studio Display work with an Intel Mac?

No. Both 2026 displays require a Mac with Apple silicon running macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later. If you are still on an Intel machine, this purchase is really a Mac purchase with a monitor attached.

Is the nano-texture glass worth £300?

Only if you sit opposite a window or under strong overhead lighting. Nano-texture scatters reflections rather than mirroring them, at a small cost in absolute contrast and a real cost in cleaning fuss, since it wants Apple's own cloth. In a room you can control the light in, £300 is better spent on the height-adjustable stand.

My take

The Apple Studio Display is a better product than it was in March and still an awkward recommendation. £1,499 for a 60Hz panel in 2026 only makes sense because of what is wrapped around it: the pixel density, the colour, the camera, the speakers and a Thunderbolt 5 hub that clears your desk of a dock.

If that bundle is what you want, buy it and stop reading reviews that score it as a monitor, because it has never really been priced as one. If what you wanted was 120Hz, the answer is £2,999 and an M4, and for most people that is where this decision quietly ends.
